I suspect the cold weather gives the car fond memories of home...;o)
I live in super-salty metro Milwaukee, WI and wax last thing in early winter, first thing in the spring, and in between am liberally rinsing it with plain hot water ( pure salt does not dissolve better in soapy water than plain water, and furthermore that industrial-strength soap strips wax quickly). I "wash" the car with just water at those DIY "wash barns" with the pressure wand - egad, yeah, anyone who'd put that scrub brush on paint is crazy! Like yourself, I get the underside and wheelwells as good as possible.
Tip: Don't put the high pressure tip right up to the paint, of course - it will also blast the wax right off. Also, don't point it directly at the door locks. Have some door lock de-icer handy at all times (like your coat pocket, not the glove compartment) because often a winter washing will freeze the lock for a spell.
