Robert, following your post, Greg is correct in the need for TLC with the Saabs, and he is not far off with the weekend need for updates and service. I have (2) spg 16 valves and a 8 valve 85/86s, I have found that the 16 valve engines do not require any additional work over the 8 valve and the 16 valve engines are stronger and smoother. You may want to get a 86 or newer ($1000 or less with a good service record and good transmission) and verify that everything has been serviced. I have noticed that the service requirements are very predictable as to service life and replacement schedules.
As to parts don't even try to get parts from the local parts supplier (Track- PeP boys etc ) they don't have very accurate information and will try to sell/order you the wrong part. Try to locate a local junk yard or use the internet/mail order houses that work with saabs exclusively. have fun good luck
