Control Arm Failure in 'Older' Saab 900's

I'm new to the Saab Network and am trying to find an answer to a question I have. I am hoping someone might be able to solve my problem or direct me to someone who might help me out!?
Anyway, I have a 1988 900 Turbo (automatic trans) which I inherited from my Mom. It was literally driven by a little old lady and garage kept, maintained very well!
It has 110K miles on it and recently the left front control arm failed. Fortunately it did so as I was pulling out of the garage and not at highway speed! I took to my mechanic and they told me the other side was cracked (though not all the way through) as well so they replaced both arms. They have worked on Saabs for like 20 years and have only replaced control arms a couple of times, so they suggested I contact Saab about the possibility of reimbursement for obviously defective parts. Saab told me that parts fail on a car of this age and mileage so they couldn't help me out. They suggested I contact a dealer to confirm that control arms, like any other part will fail routinely with age. They gave me the name of a dealer, and when I called him he stated that he replaces about three failed control arms per month! (he uses USED replacement parts!!!)
I've owned a lot of high mileage cars (two Nissans, a Toyota, a Volvo and a Mercedes) and I've NEVER had nor heard of a control arm failing. In fact, if the control arms do fail as often as the local dealer suggested, one would expect some to happen at highway speeds with rather catastrophic results!
I need some more info and an objective, reliable authority to back up my claim that these parts shouldn't have failed, can anyone help?!?!
Thanks,
Larry Moray
