When it comes to coolant leaking, all I can say is 'it depends'. If you leak a few drops of coolant a day, it will take a few months to really notice it on the reservoir.
If you really want to monitor your coolant level, always do it with a cold engine. The coolant level rises when the car is warm (things expand), and since 'warm' is relative, you can never be quite sure. Just open the hood first thing in the morning before starting the car, and check the level. Make a mark with some chalk if that will help. Always compare levels with the engine off and the same temperature. If it's 20 degrees out one day and 32 the next, don't sweat that - it's the difference between 32F and a hot engine at 240F.
I really, really, really doubt you've got a head problem. With cars the tendancy is to assume the worst whenever you see something out of the ordinary, whereas 95% of the time it's nothing to worry about. Of course, that remaining 5% is a real bear---
