Dan:
Running the pump without fluid may have destroyed it, but maybe not. Since fluid comes out of your reservoir, the pump appears to be doing SOMEthing!
If fluid is being forced out, it's likely because it is not freely flowing back in. The pump and reservoir form a simple loop and fluid flows continuously around the loop while the pump (engine) is running. Fluid should come in to the reservoir just as fast as it is pulled out, so that you can safely operate the pump and observe the reservoir with the cap open.
I'd first examine the reservoir outlet (intake hose to the pump) to see if there is blockage there. Your system might benefit from flushing -- a topic we discussed here a few weeks ago. If you click "more from Monster" above, then look back to "Changing my P/S fluid" on 19 January, you'll see what I did.
Look down at the bottom of the reservoir and see if anything is stuck down there at the outlet nipple. Maybe you can fish around down there with a wire before trying to take the whole thing apart, or even snake a thick wire down the hose a bit. If you don't find the blockage that way, I'm thinking that if you do a flush, you might clear that line up. Perhaps a glob of something got sucked down the inlet hose and the pump might be able to pull it through. Try flushing it the way I outlined in that other post and see if it clears the blockage.
If that doesn't work, you're probably looking at having to remove the hose from the pump to clean it out, and that's going to be a tough and messy job, due to the difficulty of reaching that pump.
Best of luck to you -- let us all know what you find.
