Wait a minute, you got me thinking here, Dan.
You said you replaced the hose to the pump, right? Maybe that's part of the problem.
The two hoses between the pump and the reservoir are different sizes. The larger diameter one goes from the bottom of the reservoir to the pump inlet. The smaller one goes from the pump outlet to the upper nipple on the side of the reservoir.
If you were to reverse these, the pump would shoot fluid up from the bottom of the reservoir, instead of returning it to the side. Also, if you used the wrong sized hoses (smaller feed line and larger return line) you could have troubles with the pump not getting "fed" properly.
Check back again and ensure you've got the hoses on the right way. If you flush your system, it will be obvious if it's connected properly -- pouring into the reservoir should result in fluid shooting out the upper (smaller) hose.
Good luck -- and let me know what you find!
