to take off... 30 seconds at best, just unscrew the clips and pop it off....hahaha I just realized that I'm thinking of my car that has no seats in it right now :) Might take a bit longer than that if you have to remove the rear seat, which I can tell you at least in an '81 doesn't take more than 15 minutes. As far as room between the body, I remember there being quite a lot of space, right behind it is the sheet metal you see on the outside, so see the difference. Have Fun!
