No car is better than it's tires. Put bald tires on a 4WD car, and it won't go anywhere. That's not to say that you have bald tires, but I'll bet that the tires on your other cars may have been a bit better.
Not all 'all season' tires are the same. The Michelin MX4's on my Jetta are pretty decent, and I've done very well in snow with Pirelli P4000 super touring on my 9000. Five years back when we had that big storm after New Years, I drove from Hartford to Stamford with a set of new P4000s on my 9000, and not only did the car go like a steam train up and down the nasty Merrit Parkway, but the ABS never even kicked in on stops. However, I still run Gislaved's on that car now.
There is no clear definition of 'all season', so a manufacturer can stick that on a tire. I had a GTI many years back with a set of Pirellis, and the first time I took it out with a half-inch of snow, I scared myself so bad I parked it until I got the snows on, when it became a real great winter car. So all tires aren't the same - not by a long shot - and don't blame the car for the tires.
We just got nailed (as you know) here in CT with 18 inches of snow (at least at my house) - I drove my 9000 with four snows home from work in 6-8 inches of unplowed crap. The car handled just fine, and I had no problem accelerating, turning, and most importantly, stopping. Much better than those SUV's upsidedown in the ditch I passed.
Studded tires are good if you drive on a lot of ice. Frankly, unless you're in a real snowbelt, I wouldn't do it. Yes, they're great on ice, but frankly, most of the time you're driving on dry roads, and they'll drive you nuts. Also, check state rules - in some states, you need to have studded tires off early in the year.
