'86 900T 5-sp w/157K on the clock. Don't know if it’s the nervous Nellies or I'm actually hearing the dreaded 4th & 5th gear *whining* sound when shifting through the gears or some other of the myriad sounds a Saab makes. I'll take it to a certified Saab mechanic for a professional opinion.
Question, if the transmission is going south, should it be fixed right away (with no other symptoms than the audible whine) or should you wait until the symptoms get worse? If it's just the worn pinion gear and it's fixed right away, is the cost significantly less? Isn't the cost on a Trans pull and pinion repair about the same as a new Trans replacement; about $2500? If the pinion gear repair is less since it's just the worn pinion being replaced so there's no core charge; ($1500). So that would make it about $1000 more or less. Am I off base here? If that’s the case, then the logic is with the early on pinion gear repair and saving about $1500.
If it’s the pinion gear whine, would replacement of Trans fluid to MTL or another syn, stave off the inevitable? It’s got 10-30 in there now for about the last 25K. Was thinking of doing this anyway.
Are the Ericksson rebuilds the way to go or are there companies others out there? I see classifieds on the TSL for rebuilds about $500-$800 range. Is this realistic or is this price just for the pinion repair? Seems like the bulk of the cost would be for labor for engine/Trans removal.
Also, if the engine/Trans is being removed, should other things be done while repair access is best; crank pulley, head gasket replacement, and water pump. Engine seals. Etc. etc. Thanks.
