I agree w/ Greg. The pinion bearing whine means that the end is near. It might go a thousand miles, or might not make it out of the driveway. There's nothing that can be done (different lube, etc.) to stave off the inevitable, and the cost of the rebuild goes up substantially if you let it go and other parts get trashed. If it goes to the point of locking up, you may not even have a rebuildable core which means you may not even get the core charge back when you get a rebuilt.
Sooo....if it were my car, I wouldn't drive it any further without getting it fixed. A big part of the cost is the time involved in R&R so you can save some bucks if you do that yourself (pull the engine or drop tranny out the bottom)
