If you plan to have your trans rebuilt, the sooner you do it after it puts you "on notice", the less it will cost. The wear items in the trans are modest in cost. It is the significant labor involved to clean everything properly that adds up. When you start needing pricey gears, the cost skyrockets. Many need a new reverse gear and that is independent of the pinion bearing failure. Driving the car 'til it locks up or won't move will ruin many other parts including the ring and pinion. When you get to that point, a swap for a rebuild is more economical. However, the price of that will climb as it becomes harder to get good cores to rebuild. The guy that advertises the low dollar rebuilds here I can say nothing about personally. I have seen one negative posting about one individual's experience. You might try contacting him to see if he can provide the names of satisfied customers you can contact. Eriksson's builds a pretty good gearbox that they at least stand behind. It's hard to do much wrong with a 5 speed.
R&R the trans is a separate issue. It costs the same irrespective of what you are putting in as long as you aren't converting between auto and stick.
