The main pulley also serves as the harmonic balancer. When the rubber and bonding agent in the middle begins to break down, the outer rings can slip relative to the inner portion. Slip frequently leads to a squeel, similar to a slipping v-belt. This occurs primarily with cold starts. Easy to check. The main pulley drives the alt/water pump (2 belts) and P/S (1 belt). The fourth belt (A/C) is driven by a pulley that attaches to the inner portion of the main pulley. Therefore it cannot slip. Use paint, crayon, chalk, etc. to draw a line across all the rings. Start the engine a couple times. Observe the line on the pulley rings (not the belts). If the main pulley is bad, the line on it's rings will no long line up with the line on the A/C pulley. If the A/C pulley line is still aligned with the main pulley, it is OK. If it is defective replace it fairly soon, as it can lead to damage to the oil pump if neglected too long. If it is OK, you're call as to keeping or replacing. My rule is to replace things that will minimize the likelihood of needing to do the job again.
