Hi, Apu!

A 150 mile highway trip should use around 6 gallons of gas, if everything's working right. That amount =could= take a Saab gas gauge from the vicinity of the 1/2 mark down to the "R," even though 6 gallons is a lot less than half a tankful. You're saying you think you might have used almost 10 gallons to go that far... and if you're right, then that's bad.

The only semi-accurate way to judge is to fill the tank, do the trip, and fill it again. The ideal way to get a good estimate would be on a long highway trip (wanna come down to Florida for a visit?) where you could fill up a couple of times in one day and then average out the MPG over a couple of tankfuls. That way you minimize any error induced by not filling it exactly to the same level each time.

Again, if you find you're getting less than 23 MPG or so on the highway, something's definitely wrong. Post back again when you get some numbers and we'll talk about all the easy do-it-yourself stuff you can try. If that doesn't improve things, we can at least educate you when you get repair quotes from a mechanic so that you aren't taken advantage of. You might only need a few simple tune-up parts you can install yourself. (When was the last time you got a new air filter?)
