I own both volvos and saabs....IMHO the volvos have far less maintenance and are cheaper to repair than the saabs. Even with my 7xx volvos; the 2xx are even better than the 7xx although I like the 7xx ride/handling better. Replacing rear suspension bushings on the 2xx always seemed like a design flaw but I digress.
The OG900 is a front wheel drive...you may or may not like the handling but you'll certainly like the snow and bad weather capability. Even volvos with limited slip rear diffs can't compare with a saab with snow tires in snow!
Routine jobs aren't with saabs. OTOH, you don't need to replace the timing rubber band (uses a chain...good for life of car or when it breaks, whichever comes first....I replaced mine on my 16v engine at 200K, YMMV) and the associated engine seals very often. The 16v engine is nearly bulletproof and the turbo will take much more boost than the 2.3L volvo engine. OTOH, the volvo engine has .3L more displacement, better low end torque (2V vice 4V). Fageddabout valve adjustment on the saab...using synthetic oil I've had them checked and never had to have them adjusted.
The saab will eat CV joints and/or rubber covers that you don't have with the volvo. The seats on the saab are 'different' from the volvo seating; I happen to like both for different reasons. IMHO the volvo seat leather on the 7xx is sturdier than the saab. Could be the saab design has better bolsters that my BFA rubs as I get in and out of the saab...the volvo hasn't worn. Brakes on the <88 OG900 saabs can be a hassle if they stick front emergency brake...I would advise getting a 90 or newer 900. Or a completely rebuilt older 900 (someone else's project car...there are a lot of sweet ones on this board, some guys with $4K paint jobs on $500 cars...you know who you are, no offense intended!), my personal choice for a nused saab would be a 93 convertible.
Electrics on the saab are no better than the 2xx volvos, except the fuses don't rust to the fuse holders but the ground strap often corrodes near the battery or one of the other 3 or 4 earthing points goes tu and gremlims appear. Fix them like the volvo. OTOH, the wiring harnesses are generally good for ever unlike the biodegradeable volvo harnesses....
I like the aesthetics (hoo boy, here we go!) of the 900 better than the 2xx volvo, especially the interior. But that's like comparing an Audi A6 to a VW Jetta to a Honda Accord. Your taste may vary.
Have a great time with your nused Saab!
