Jeff,
There are plenty of good arguments for why a special car is or is not what it has been made to be. Is a 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster replicar, made from a kit, with the correct engine, and all other parts to make it look and drive like a real Speedster, REALLY a speedster? No. It's just a great fake, and that is good enough. For purists like myself, the factory had to designate that car, that frame, that shell, to be honored as an SPG. Call me sentimental and wacko as you may, but that's just my opinion. I am a fan of Saabs, Porsches, and Pontiacs (old muscle car units, not that damn new pile of crap Aztec that should be ashamed to carry the Pontiac name)
Saabs have SPGs, Porsches have 911 Turbos, and Pontiacs have GTOs. All of these cars can be duplicated and immitated through modifications; similar frames and bodies taken and modified to appear to be something they are not; engines tweaked to even outperform the original. In the end, it is still a modified car trying to be something it was not in the first place. I respect the car, but as a purist, there is a definite distinction to be made if the car is as original as possible.
I'm sure Royce would have some choice words for your designation of his ride. Some cars are just not nice to their owners. It happens. Every SPG I have owned has been super nice to me. They have all been ALL ORIGINAL, ALL STOCK. I have modified my current ride, my 88 SPGx, but it still is and will always be an original SPG.
Note: I hated my college Philosophy class, since all we talked about for 3 months was this question:
If a boat is completely taken apart, board for board, bolt for bolt, etc., and then all of those pieces are reassembled on another frame, and the boat looks exactly the same... is it the same boat?
OR
If a boat is completely taken apart, and the same frame is used to rebuild the boat with all new parts, is it still the same boat?
