My family has owned many SAABs. Our 89 convertable was by far the most problematic of the bunch.

It required a 5spd rebuild at 75K and a head gasket at the same time.
It always seems to need something, and the LH2.4 fuel injection is a pain in the ass compared to 2.2.
The car runs very well, but it is and always has been slow. One of the slowest turbo SAABs we have ever owned. (my 87 convertable would all out smoke it, and I think my 84 8 valve turbo would keep up with it)
It has required a bunch of other normal small SAAB crap. (blower, heater control valve, top, rear window, rear calipers rebuilt)

On the other hand, the seats(which are diffent then previous years) have held up GREAT.
The dash has also held up well (compared to other SAABs)
The 89 is a nice year in that you get the good brakes (88+) without ABS.
You also don't have an airbag, which makes for a prettier steering wheel.
The 89 convertable is I believe the only year convertable which came with the leather wrapped 3 spoke steering wheel stock.
The car has not rusted at all. ( a big plus)
It is a pretty car, but it really has required a lot. Maybe its a fluke, but it does seem to require more maintence then other SAABs we own.

I should add that I bought an 89 9000CDT a few moths ago from a friend. The car has 228k, and is in really nice shape. Other then the auto failing a few years ago, this car has been preety good to all three of its owners.

Not all 89's have those funny belts.( I think). They are not impossible to remove.
