Changing the tranny oil for the first time...

All,
Well it's that time. Finally pulled the little 19mm hex plug (grunt) on the RH side of the manual trans, and I can see lube in there but unfortunatley it was just barely on the stick. It was below the 2 rings on the little check rod. Since the car has had unknown prior changes and is now with nearly 135K on the clock, I guess its time to get stinking dirty and drain this stuff out. FWIW I think it is oil, not gear lube because it did not smell nearly as nasty as the GL.
Now the dilemma, refill it with what? I know what Bentley says, and what Townsend says (Amsoil 20w50), and have read what scores of others have posted here. My car is a 90 900S, still shifts good. I am NOT interested in changing to synthetic just for the prestige of it all, and end up with leaks spouting from everywhere. I am seriously leaning toward (gasp) putting back in some 10w30 Castrol or equal Dino oil so to just keep the show rolling and avoid the Valdez spill, or freeing up happily stuck metal particles which subsequently blow the thing up! I have got teenagers to feed, I don't need any surprises!
Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
DET
