I don't know about convertibles, but I've installed 5 1/4" speakers in the rear seat armrest panels in my hatchbacks over the years. The cavity is pretty well sealed, and the bass response is surprisingly good (considering the size of the woofer...)
Unfortunately, your doors are already ported- the slot where the window retracts will never be airtight.
How does your roof affect the sound quality? I can hear quite a bit of difference in sound quality with just the sunroof and rear windows popped open, not to mention everything wide open at 75mph... ;o)
