never had 12's under the front seats, the speakers probably wouldn't fit due to their mounting depth. I have had 6.5's under the front seats which did sound quite good. They speakers (Polk Audio) had a seperate amp playing 120 hz & below which sounded 100x's better then the Rockford Fosgate audiophile 12's I was running previously. You also might be able to squeez 8 in speaker(s) under there but again the mounting depth of the speaker is what will make or break that :o( Any descent 6.5 would work, the hardest thing is to find a brand which sells them seperate :o)
Another way is to make a single 8, 10 or 12 inch speaker in the spare tire compartment. Going with the smaller 2 would allow you to mount them where the tool kit is with relative ease. Any good 8 or 10 in speaker shouldn't require more then .5 cu ft which shouldn't be a problem in that area. You would lose zero trunk/hatch area going this way & the speakers will play those low frequencies better.
hope it helps
