From what I've read.. synthetic oil doesn't turn into honey like regular oil in cold weather. Mobil 10w30 is good for -45 degrees F. I think 5w30 would take you down to -50 deg. Take a look at the mobil link. They say regular oil thickens up in cold weather due to waxes that aren't removed during refining.
