Amsoil makes a great Series 2000 (maybe 3000 now, I forget) synthetic oil that I've used since I had my 87 900T rebuilt. I use 10W-40 amsoil marine synthetic on the other cars, including a 2000 Audi 4.2Q V8 with around 20K on it that uses 8.5 quarts on 8500mi factory recommended oil changes. The marine synthetic meets all SAE standards and has a peculiar price break that I don't know how long Amsoil will allow to stand.

The viscosity rating is what the oil is tested to; the synthetic will in fact maintain its high and low temp viscosity for higher and lower temperatures than dino oil, and for longer periods too.

Go to http://www.amsoil.com and check out the oil specs.

I concur with DIFC....Castrol Syntec would be my last choice. A year or so ago one magazine conducted its own tests on synthetic oil volatility (dunno if it exactly replicated the NOACK volatility test) and Syntec flunked spectacularly...somewhere around 18% vs Amsoil <7% as I recall. Industry minimum is around 12% AFAIK. This means you will lose approximately one quart of a five quart fill in 100 hours of engine operation (figure around 30mph average or there goes your quart of oil in 3000miles!)
