Let's see if I remember this on my 85. Do not remove the line from the banjo fitting...you will be sorry...That "locknut" at the bottom of the banjo I believe is the hex body of the check valve which the banjo fitting slips over. The check valve has a male NPT end which screws into the top of the main pump. the idea is to get a wrench on what you term as that thin "locknut" The top bolt is the only bolt which holds the banjo on top of the check valve. It would be very nice to have a thin open end wrench to get over the check valve hex (locknut) while using a wrench in opposition on the top bolt. Holding the pump body, persay, does nothing.
