installing new fuel pre-pump

I have a 1986 SPG that has a dying fuel pre-pump. I've purchased a new pump, and attempted to install it a few nights ago. I had to give up because I couldn't get the lock nut that holds the “banjo” fitting attached to the fuel line loose. The fitting is in between a big nut on top and a thin lock nut on the bottom. I have a Bentley manual, and it says to remove the top nut while holding the top of the pump with a wrench, taking care not to damage the electrical connectors. I can't do this without loosening the lock nut. The other option is to remove the fuel line from the banjo fitting and then take both nuts and the fitting off as one, but I worry about not getting the fuel line back on. It seems to be on there pretty tightly. I know this sounds a bit confusing, but if anyone has any experience with this problem I'd appreciate the help. Once I get the fuel line off it should be pretty straight forward.
