welding is an art. takes a lot of time and practice to do it...

right. i spend much of my time inspecting welds done on shipbuilding (steel, aluminum, hss, etc.) and hull plating repair. it's much easier to inspect than to actually do the welding. if you want to make nice little trinkets for gifts for family, or you are making art type shapes for yourself, then by all means go ahead and do some welding. but, if you are expecting your material to hold up to any type of stress, you're better off leaving it to a professional. i've seen too many welds fail, even under light stress situations. and some were completed by fairly experienced welders. keep in mind, however, that my standards are quite high, a ship that no longer displaces water, doesn't float. have to keep passengers and cargo safe. just my thoughts.
