Exploded inner driver - GregD, whazzup with this?

GregD,
My new to me 87 Turbo was lame when I brought it home (see earlier posts by Kestrel, my son).
After further investigation upon the ramps, I find the driver side inner driver "disassembled", such that the tripod bearing is OUTBOARD of the housing! Now the OD of the driver is still there, the end of it which faces the axle is buggered up, but the tripod is no longer within. How is this possible? I thought with full suspension travel, the tripod could not physically come out of the ID. My driverside suspension appears to be still in place. Is this possible if the CV is toasted, and would that let the axle move out of the ID far enough for the tripod to leave orbit?
I also pulled the diff. cover and see nothing abbynormal. Spidergears, Ring, etc. look OK. Amount of metal on magnet plug was "normal" I am guessing, nothing but micro pieces radiating outward from plug. Also I did not find any large chunks of metal in the oil (which smells like gear oil). Turned the remains of the ID with a pipe wrench, and it seems to drive the diff OK although the connection seems a bit sloppy (231K ?)
What do you think?
