The length of the shaft was increased in 87 by 6mm. I suspect that an 86 shaft will fit fine, albeit a bit short. Can't picture a PN on the shaft anywhere so the only way to check may be to remove it at the outer CV and compare length with known correct one. You should replace the outer boot while you're there anyway. If the splines are boogered, you need a new shaft. Many options are available there. Another possibility is that the engine mounts are so bad that the engine shifted and the shaft popped out-doesn't take that much. It's little surprise that the circlip on the tripod would be gone after "dynamic separation". I'd be surprised if the whole tripod assembly wasn't blown apart.
The "slack" (aka backlash) between the ring and pinion is normal. the spec of 0.007" is easily discernible. They way you are checking it you are also picking up lots of other normal slack in the driveline.
