catalytic converter caught on fire...

while cruising up a long grade in the remote Cobequid Pass in Nova Scotia. Suddenly, all power disappeared, looked back at billowing clouds of smoke and thought "uh oh". Pulled over, popped hood, car started filling with smoke. Got girlfriend and dog running out and away, looked underneath and saw flames all over cat and red-hot exhaust pipes.
Decided against/with (you choose) to run away and watch my beautiful black 88 SPG burn up. Luckily, the fire went out in a couple minutes. Then the colorful crowd of volunteer firefighters showed up with a peak volume of about 30 onlookers. I had gone up and pulled the battery cable off when the started started to go on its own and the antenna started to move up and down.
So, got the 175 km tow back home (imagine that cost).
So, the questions:
•Should I claim this as an insurance job ($500 deductible)?
•Should I get the dealership to do it (I have only had bad experiences with them before in terms of both price and quality of work)?
•I know my ignition is shorted out, my door locks, and antenna. What could the extent of damage be (i.e. ecu, stereo, amp, etc.)? What could I be facing?
•Any other advice?
Thanks for your help
