you can drive on it until it fails. If you want to just reboot and re-lube it, I would look at it very soon. It has probably been split for a while if it is just now making noise. It may be worn already and require a rebuilt or new CV joint to stop the racket. The only way to know is to remove it, disassemble it and inspect it.
