I'm thinking the connector plug on the distributor? That thing is so small and brittle and prone to failure. I've seen many at the local scrap yards that cracked and had to be "jimmie" fixed - tape, epoxy, shoe glue... Perhaps the wiring right there on the plug snapped. A likely scenario considering all the heat it's exposed to, plus the force needed to disconnect that plug at times. Even if the insulation on the wires is intact, the copper wire inside could have snapped.

Also, the timing info sent to the distributor via that connector begins quite a ways away from the distributor itself. Since the connector wiring is fed into the main harness, perhaps that's where the problem is. The early 80's 900's wiring harnesses are prone to failure with age. Failure leading to fire is common. I was stunned to discover on my previous 82 900 that the insulation on several individual wires inside that harness which runs across the engine block (which includes the distributor feed wires)had decayed to the point where the wiring in several places was bare. The main positive wire coming from the starter and going to the fuse box had virtually no insulation to speak of! The cause? Perhaps a leak in the cooling system (near the pump?) drained into and saturated the inside of that harness, the chemicals eating away at the insulation over time. Perhaps even from a brake fluid spill. I wasn't the original owner, so I wouldn't know of those leaks and spills.

Split open the harness casing material and look inside. You may get a frightening surprise and the solution to your problem!
