Radiator Fan Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Radiator flushed-Thermostat is in....Now what's wrong?, Scout, Mon, 9 Jul 2001 14:05:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The key phrase is 'overheat in traffic'. I assume the car only overheats when it's sitting, and not when it's moving along.
Is the radiator fan running? It should run when the temperature gets near the red. There is a thermoswitch on the radiator. If the needle gets to the red and the fan doesn't come on, then-
(1) check the radiator fan fuse.
(2) Make sure the fan spins - Try shorting the leads on the thermoswitch on the radiator to each other. That should get the fan spinning. If not, disconnect the fan, and hook it up to 12 volts from the battery. Be careful - it's a powerful fan.
(3) make sure the thermoswitch on the radiator works. There is also a relay that feeds power to the fan thermoswitch. A problem with any of these will keep the fan from running.
You can also replace the thermoswitch in the radiator with a cooler switch (available from townsend, 'natch).
If the fan isn't running, that hot coolant just sits in the radiator with no airflow when you're stuck in traffic. The radiator fan replaces the airflow lost when not moving.
If you overheat when moving - and I mean 30 mph or more, and at least a few car lengths from the vehicle in front - then my guess would be a plugged radiator.
good luck
