very likely rad, but could also be things I noted ... esp pressure loss.
pull the new t-stat and test per Ari, if good, re-use it.
cold start test for t-stat:
start and let idle. gage should rise to about 1/2 green, then as t-stat opens, upper hose gets very hot. gage stays near 1/2 with standard 87C t-stat (a little below with optional 82C one). This suggests proper t-stat functioning. once all rad water is hot, gage will rise again.
with small mechanic's mirror, you can peak into the rad thru upper hose port .... if tube inlets are crusted over, get new rad.
don't run w/o t-stat .. in a pinch, cut out the spring/valve body and install the shell. this will seal better, and slow flow a tad.
