Did 57 Plymouth (Christine's older brother) rocker panels this way with roller using OEM paint. Matched perfectly but sanding took awhile even for a small area. Only real problem was when tack welding JCWhitney rocker panel covers on, I started the balls of newspaper on fire that the previous owner had stuffed behind the rust holes to bondo against. Smoldered for three full days, even fire extinguisher couldn't stop it. My mother ordered it off of the driveway and was highly skeptical of my DIY skills for the rest of her life. the old raised eyebrow...
You can also rent a spray gun and a small compressor from Taylor or equiv. and buy the OEM paint by the quart for much less than spray cans. Whole job for <$100. Use 3M surface prep/cleaner to get ALL the old wax and oil off to avoid the orange peel/fisheye defects. By the end of the job, you will know how to spray paint!! Go for it, but you must tell the story.
