Call me a big chicken, Skippy, but I generally don't remove anything I can reach around... my experience has been that taking off things like the master cylinder and hoses will only cause or uncover other headaches! So that's why I left 'em on. I guess if you have huge, manly, muscular arms, you might feel better getting those things out of your way, but I'm built more like a spider monkey and it wasn't a problem for me to reach around.
As for the A/C bolts... I used metric sockets and extensions or metric wrenches to get mine off. Don't remember now exactly what size, but I'm thinking they were around 13 or 14mm. I wasn't able to remove the compressor mounting bracket, which would have been nice... but taking the compressor OFF the bracket was straightforward, with two metric bolts on each side. With the compressor moved off to the side, I had a fairly straight shot at the water pump underneath that mounting bracket.
Did you ever have your compressor replaced? Maybe when it was changed, they used some non-OEM mounting hardware? Or maybe it was one of those things Saab changed from year to year. (Mine's an '87.)
