So many folks treat cars as appliances. Like a toaster or a refrigerator, they expect them to last forever with no maintenance. It's like someone being pissed when their dog dies, and all they did was forget to feed it for a few weeks.

Things I have personally seen from people I'm afraid to admit I know -

Siezed engine from lack of oil - "Why should I put oil in? I didn't take any out!"

VW bug driven for 3 days with the oil light on "I didn't think it was serious". What? A serious problem, or that the light was just kidding? (and on the fourth day, it siezed).

A friend who checked the oil and saw the dipstick dry. Drove to Kmart, bought 1 qt of oil, drove home, poured it in. Dripstick still dry. Drive to Kmart, buy 1 qt of oil, drive home, pour it in, dipstick still dry. Repeated four times. This in a car with a 4.5 qt sump. The miracle is that other than a rod knock to wake the dead, the car kept running.

Friend that had never had a brake job in 70K miles. Wondered why the brakes squealed some much. (worn PAST the rivets). When she picked up the car after service, she almost put herself through the windshield because the car could now stop without doing a 150lb leg press.

Somebody that ignored the sounds from the engine until flames came out from under the hood. Another "I wanted to get it home".

We read this BB and find folks worried about a 0.2volt drop on the battery voltage, which synthetic oil is better, or the best spark plug to use. Most folks out there think volts is the first name of a German car, oil changes are for sissys, and not only should the spark plugs last the life of the car, you should be able to re-use them in your new one.

I know your pain. I had a '72 Karmann Ghia. It was the first car I ever owned. Car was really nice, but up in miles and took TLC. Sold it to a guy who was sure that it was going to be a collector's item. About a year later, saw it in a garage lot, and asked the shop owner. It had no compression in one cylinder, down in the other three. It didn't sit level, and the steering gear was shot. I have no idea what the guy did, or didn't do to it, but as a collector's item, it was spent. Very sad.

We are indeed the minority.
