my sister in law did the same thing

87 bulletproof mazda 626. It had 160k+ mi on it, and it was leaking a little radiator fluid. She did not check it for a week or so and ran it dry. "I was on the interstate and I had to floor it to keep up with traffic". Did not bother to look at the temp gage once. It did not occur to her that this abnormal behavior by the car may require her to stop the car to prevent further damage. It is really a testament to the average robustness of the current (past 20 years) crop of cars (across the board with a few exceptions). 30 years ago, the learned behavior of checking everything before even a short trip were common. Now, they are ignored and most of the time nothing 'bad' happens. When something bad happens, it is the fault of the 'guy who fixed it' not the loose nut behind the steering wheel.
