The main problem is that the long bolt that secures the alternator to it's bracket doesn't have enough clearance to the firewall to allow it to come out. The solution is to rotate the Alt mounting bracket to provide clearance. The alternator mounting bracket is held with three bolts, One is shared with the AC bracket, one is to the left as you look at it from the driver's side, and a third is below where you can't get at it easily. Remove the first two bolts and rotate the bracket on the third bolt. This provides clearance to remove the long mounting bolt.
Get clearance to work by unbolting the AC bracket and gently setting the compressor to the side. The bolt that's common to the AC bracket and the Alt bracket is easier to remove with a long 12mm box-end wrench that's bent to provide a better angle. Note, that the AC bracket on some cars uses a slotted hole for this bolt, so it's not necessary to completely remove the bolt to move the AC compressor.
