Find a nicer car with tranyitis... Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Opinions wanted -- Saab orphan in Florida, Monster, Tue, 21 Aug 2001 21:44:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
unless your friend !really! likes to do electrical work.
I can understand the appeal of wanting to save a rolling chassis and resurrect it. However, I really have to dig far into my imagination to take point A: the car you just described, to point B: a daily driver.
From your glorious history on this BB, and your friend's obvious mechanical abilities and resources, I'm sure that you (both) can make this project succeed. You can probably save yourselves a fairly big chunk of time by finding a car with transmission problems and/or driveability problems and/or neglect until the brakes rust solid and mice eat the belts and hoses and all the fluids spoil problems.
Perhaps I've got a warped perspective from living in places where SAABs are plentiful and classic 900's are frequently being retired and parted out. I bought my first '86 900T from a guy who had a 944T in addition to some other SAAB turbos. He told me that the Porsche was far more maintanence-intensive than any SAAB he'd ever owned. We all know that our c900's require a good deal of attentive care to run reliably- the car you looked at will require every bit of that attentive care in addition to huge quantities of troubleshooting and repairs.
The electrical anomolies you described immediately before the car died could have easily fried any electrical component in the car, and obviously got at least one of them. The wiring harness has already been mangled to match the body damage in the front corner, and the car has been rusting for ??? years?
I think that this car could be a terrific engine/tranny donor to a better shell.
If your oratory skills are a shadow of your writing ability, you have probably already convinced your friend to "get to know" a SAAB. This is excellent advice. Now start looking around for a nice one...
...and of course, keep us posted on the fate of your "orphan"
