Hi Justin,
I'm from Chicago and we do get snow, at least one blizzard a year that will shut down Ohare and cause all types of problems. Do yourself a favor, buy a good set of dedicated snow tires, M+S tires are good but when the deep stuff hits you'll thank me for the snow tire recommendation. Scotty was right about driving style also, as a general rule, never NEVER be in a rush even if it isn't snowing, you never know when you'll hit a patch of ice. Easy starts and stops are what your looking for, don't make any sudden moves (i.e., don't slam on brakes you'll slide) Make everything you do when driving relaxed and take it easy on the speed. Increase your following distance by more than half of what you usually do. Be carefull of intersections, you may not slide but it doesn't mean someone else wont be sliding into the intersection. As a general rule when the light turns grean I never hit the gas right away make sure you look around. Also intersections, particularly intersections that connect side streets to major streets, are dangerous. Often the side streets are the last ones cleared if they are cleared at all and cars exiting them will drag snow, slush, and ice into the cleaned major street. Remember that during the day some snow will melt and then ice over again, especially at intersection where snow has collected. I don't mean to scare you but driving in cold conditions is serious and you should take it serious. Remember this is your first winter so you'll encounter alot that you've never even thought off. I suggest once you get your snow tires, after the first good snow fall go to a empty parking lot and practice everything. Thats a good safe way to learn your car's limits in the white stuff, Its also lots of fun too ;).

Mike
