My friend, I'm a little surprised you weren't ticketed for failure to yield the right of way! :> The left lane is for passing. If there's nobody in front of you and you're not passing anyone, you need to move over and yield the right-of-way.
The trooper may have been on his way to a crime or accident and just wanted to get by you quickly. Probably was not after you for speeding. Next time, signal and then move over, and don't cruise there in the left lane, regardless of your speed.
This sort of brings up another topic. One of the things that brings on road rage are the so-called "Left Lane Loafers." Down here in Florida they're usually one of two cases. Either they're old people who putter along at less than the posted limit and create rolling roadblocks, or they're the cruise control morons who set their speed and REFUSE to speed up to pass someone, even if they're passing a line of 10 cars with 1 mph of overtake. The result in either case is there's usually a few hotheads nailed to the Loafer's rear bumper trying to push him/her out of the way. In my book, both parties are partially to blame -- but the hothead, for his impatience and tailgating, wouldn't be back there flashing his lights and darting back and forth if the Left Lane Loafers would just get out of the way.
I've got a good buddy who's a Left Lane Loafer of the cruise control variety. He's was a Marine in Vietnam and we're the bestest of friends, but his driving makes me nuts. He's always talking about the "whackos out there" (on the road) who flip him off, veer in front of him and slam on the brakes, etc. -- but he cannot understand (I've tried to tell him) that he brings it on himself by failure to yield the passing lane. He insists that because he sets his cruise control to 3 mph over the posted limit, nobody has a right to complain about being behind him. After all, he's speeding! So he sees nothing wrong with getting alongside a truck or something and staying there for 10 minutes on the Interstate while miles of cars line up behind him. He cannot understand that he's being rude, and he won't goose the throttle for the few seconds it would take to get past the truck and move over. He's often got cars riding his bumper, suddenly veering to the right when they have a chance, and then passing him on the right, giving him dirty looks, honking their horns, flipping him off, or whatever. And he still won't change his habits.
I've pointed out to him that the things he complains about never happen to me. I've shown him road signs that say "Slower Traffic Keep Right." He interprets that to mean "If You're Below The Speed Limit, Stay Right; If You're Above, Stay Left." I've tried to point out that "Slower" is a relative term, with no particular speed implied. He doesn't think he's "Slower." Sigh....
"So I, just maintained 65mph and did not move out of the way. After about 3-5 minutes of him sticking to me like glue, he swerves into the middle lane, guns it and as he is passing me, his head almost turns 180 degress and he gives me a stern look."
Anyway, Angelo, I'm glad you didn't get a ticket. I hope you don't always drive like my buddy Steve. Please keep right, except to pass. Cheers!
