If you do a lot of long road trips, the way to go is CB channel 19. Truckers always have their eyes open and are warning each other of speed traps. Just put on your southern accent and tell people at what "yard stick" (mile marker) you saw a "bear". They'll thank you and let you know what's waiting for you.

"Bear rolling on 71 soutbound at the 152 yard stick"
"Bear hiding at the 210 mile stick"

You get the idea.

Keep your ears on and you'll be safer than no CB. I've also had 'em sneak on to the highway an no one will see them. Just hope you're not going 100mph past the entrance ramp!

All that said, though... If you're a chronic speeder, you WILL get caught sooner or later. You'll let your guard down, pass a new speed trap, be out of town with unfamiliar speed traps, or just plain get unlucky when a cop comes out of nowhere. It's a risk, and you have to make the call with your own cost/benefit analysis.

Now that I've had a "flex-time" software job for the past few years, I've realized there is no reason to rush anywhere. I take my time and try to be safe. I know where I can have fun driving fast, but I don't risk it too often.

My best Ohio State Patrol Story. I'm taking my grandmother to southern Ohio for a visit with my parents. At the time I had a radar/laser detector AND CB. Both were off. I get pulled over by the state smokey bear... Usual banter: "Is there a problem officer?" "Do you know how fast you were going, son?" blah blah. He's checking my info (and I do have a pile of tickets) and a call comes over his radio. Wreck up ahead, fresh batch of donuts, whatever. He came back to the car, told me he had to run. "slow down and be careful, you're lucky today". He ran back to his cruiser and burned rubber outta there. Probably was a special on those chocolate donuts with the sprinkles. Lucky me.

Later my insurance company dropped me for all the other tickets. I got a better deal elsewhere for 2 cars and 2 drivers (was just married around the time I got dropped). I've been driving no more than about 8-10 over for about the past 2 years. I'm hoping my rates drop soon. $100 for a ticket won't break me, it's the $2k/year rates that suck...
