drive axle removal

I have been studying the Haynes manual to replace both of my drive axles (the passenger side is really shot). Do I really need to remove the steering knuckle to remove the axle? It seems like a lot of work to remove the ball joints and steering tie rod to remove the axle. I am used to VW's and I only need to remove the axle.
also if I do need to remove the knuckle, will I need a puller to push out the axle from the knuckle? Seems like once the nut is removed and the axle and knuckle are off the axle would come right out yet knowing my luck the axle will stick in the knuckle. If so I need to secure a steering knuckle.
