On the highway. He has 205/55/15s (5.5" width) on his 86 notchback LPT while I have 205/50/16s (6.5" width) on my 88 SPG. We found that our speedometers read the exact same speed as the other between 60 - 80 mph (didn't check any other ranges). The RPMs were different (off by 100 - 200 rpm), but our trannys are not geared the same (he has a 91 box in his car, with different primary gears than my 88, which has a stock tranny)
I know this does not specifically answer your question, but it speaks to the comparability of speedometers and different size tires.
Of course, both of our speedos could be reading incorrectly but some how the same as the other.
