I agree, and back in the day when I lived on campus I needed to take drives for some personal time away from the darn campus. Beauty of residential college is that you dont NEED your car, so you can spend weeks on end fixing things... Further, I cant IMAGINE spending more than $250 a month every month on repairs... Think of it this way: If you buy a honda, you will pay $250 plus whatever repairs the honda needs (contrary to popular belief, Hondas DO indeed break). From all three Saabs I figure I pay about $500 on a good year, not more than $2000 most of the time... this year my trans and fuel pump went tho, so it was more. I dont really work on my current car (too complicated and too much invested to screw it up).
For an example, I drove my 1980 900 GLE from Connecticut to North Carolina for 2 years, about 700 miles each way multiple times a year. first year I spent about $800 on maintenance and repairs, racked up about 20,000 miles, all on a 20 year old saab with 200K miles on it and rather beaten on by previous owners.
You may have a different story, but I bet you will save some $$$ by keeping the saab and driving gently for the next 4-5 years...
