I've never had a perfectly shifting 900. They have varied in degrees of:
1. Hunt and crunch for first
2. Grind or crunch into 2nd.
3. Hunt for 5th.
4. 3rd and 4th have always been clean and near "perfect".
Even my newly rebuilt 5speed (w/ new syncros) is still a bit notchy, but since it occurs most when cold I attibute alot to gear oil.
BTW, the mechanic swears by straight 75W gear oil (no 75-90) with yearly changes. Coincidentally I changed the 75W90 to redline when I got the car and less than 5000miles later the pinions failed. Coincidence or Townsend stat? I'm dying to change back to redline for the sweet shifting but am too light in the wallet to mess with the Saab continuum....
