I was unable to get into 5th or Reverse after doing a complete tranny/engine swap and loads of other work on my '89 cvt. To align the shifter using no special tools, all I did was the following:
-shift into 3rd
-remove the rubber block in front of the shifter on the center console
-Jack up the car, support it on jackstands, crawl under, and undo the nut on the pinch bolt on the shifter column - it is in front of the shift joint. Space is tight, but using a 6-inch extension on a 13mm deep socket, I was able to get at it just fine. Loosen completely, then pull the shifter nub on the tranny back to make sure it is "all the way" in 3rd.
-Got into the car, selected an allen wrench that would just barely fit through the hole on the alignment bar, dropped it in, and moved the shifter until it fell all the way through into the hole below.
-Keeping the allen wrench in, I crawled back under and tightened the bolt back up.
-Removed the allen, checked shift pattern (It works!), and packed it all back up.
I had no need to lock the column or use any special tools at the tranny end.
Good luck!
