I posted last week about my troubles/questions in adjusting the selector. I took the advice of those who posted on the board and I followed the instructions from the Bentley. Instead of the special tool, I used a phillips screwdriver (just insert it through the hole in the rod and us the little "guides" on the tranny case to position the rod). Use another phillips screwdriver to lock the gearshift (in the cabin) in 3rd; do this only after the connection to the tranny has been loosend. My car now shifts perfectly 1 through 5 & R, AND the back-up/reverse lights work fine too. Overall the adjustment is not all that hard...Good luck...
