you drive it, the more expensive to fix; it eventually damages other parts too.
I was wondering about the clutch/throwout bearing getting wet, but prolly not that if you don't hear the noise in all gears, or if it goes away when you put the pedal in.
Don't know if a used tranny is available from a wreck, but, if you can find a low milage one, that would be cheaper if it lasts. The larger pinion in you transmission lasted a bit longer, but didn't solve the pinion problem.
W/ your milage, could very well be the pinion, I've heard of some, in the pre-89 transmissions going about 70-80,000 miles.
