increasing boost with stock distributor

I have given some thought from time to time of tweaking my APC (I have read the tweak your APC page). I would rather not permanently alter my distributor or invest in an MSD BTM system. But I have a 3.0 bar FPR and a multimeter... Is this safe? I assume I will not achieve max boost but my knock sensor should still take care of me (I am thinking of matching the 185HP box)?
I would like to run 92-94 octane when I want to have fun but 87 otherwise. I know, I know, I want it all. Is this an OK thing to do with a tweaked APC? What fuel grade is recommended for the later SPGs?
I would be doing this to my '93 900TC. I will have to verify my transmission production number to make sure I am at least following Saabs recommendation for transmission. Anyone know for sure?
