which does NOT automatically come on. Current is only sent to seat when dash switch is in 1, 2, or 3 position. Pretty sure you do not have nickel sized thermostat, at least in driver's seat.
You have a thermo-sender on top of seat bottom cushion under seat cover fabric (small probe with black tip on the end and one black and one blue wire going to it) which tells the relay in the dash switch if seat temp. is below value required to flick power to heater grids. The relay in dash switch does the "flicking."
Get an ohmmeter and check if seatback's plug has continuity (0 ohms) across the two "holes" in its connector. If so, seatback's grid is OK, and problem is elsewhere--i.e. bottom grid or circuit to seat.
BTW, passenger's side, at least on my non-dash switch controlled '84 900, has separate power plug meant specifically for pass. seat.
