...yes, the pin can't come out of adjustment - I think whatever it hits down there in the shifter mechanism is what's wearing out. That's why the Bentley spec doesn't work. The first time I lengthened the pin, the fix lasted only a couple months - probably didn't turn it out of the shaft far enough. Second time I gave it a bunch of turns. Occasionally, it won't stop the shifter, but that's usually if I'm in a hurry to get out of my car and I really jam it over hard to get it into Reverse.
Mine was busted for a long time before I got off my lazy @ss and fixed it. Not too tough to get to 5th without it - just a smooth diagonal motion from 4th...
